Buried Treasure in Fairfax / San Anselmo

Per Michelle Sargeant Kaufman, Director of the Marin History Museum — some historical facts and lore about Marin.

How many of you knew that:

  • Marin County was the original site for the United Nations.
  • Randolph Hearst initially built his “castle” in Sausalito, but he was ostracized from society because he built it for his girlfriend – so he moved everything to San Simeon.
  • There is a buried treasure somewhere in the San Anselmo-Fairfax area.  Domingo Sais, originally granted that land did not believe in banks and buried all of his money in a strong box, but had a heart attack on his ride back and died before he told anyone where he put it – it is still out there.
